Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
